Erik J. Wait, M.D., died Monday, June 14, 2010, in Brookings, South Dakota. Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Friday, June 18, 2010, at the First United Methodist Church in Brookings, with interment of cremated remains at Greenwood Cemetery in Brookings. Visitations will be from 4-7 P.M. Thursday at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings. Memorials are preferred to the National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI), an organization dedicated to an increasing public awareness of mental illness. Erik was born June 2, 1963 in Sioux Falls, grew up in Brookings, South Dakota, and graduated from Brookings High School. At Augustana College he played football for two years and majored in Biology and Chemistry. After receiving his medical degree from the University of South Dakota, he did his Residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology from the University of Missouri in Columbia.
Erik worked for the past ten years as a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, in addition to his medical practice. Every person who crossed paths with Erik was impressed by his love of family, work and life. His gentleness, his humor and his friendly spirit drew others to him.
Erik Wait loved his family and his profession. Whether he was earning a black belt in karate, building a pond in his backyard or playing computer games, Erik valued his time with his family. He loved to play. He loved to laugh. He loved to hug. His deep commitment to his profession was evident in his compassion for each one of his patients, his caring for their concerns and his work toward their healing. Erik was a highly trained physician skilled in the science and art of medicine.
Survivors include his wife, Anya; sons, Devin of Plano, TX, and Zachary and Rowan Wait, of Brookings, and Kyle Buttermore of Ames, Iowa; daughters, Brittini of Madison, Wisconsin, Ava of Plano, Texas, Rya and Annika, of Brookings; his mother, Barbara Wait, her husband, Edwin Ellem, of Cabot, Arkansas; his brothers, David (Teresa) of Couer d Alene, Idaho, and Steven, of Cabot, Arkansas; his sister, Kathy (Gery) McClendon, of Cabot, Arkansas; aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews.
