Erik Jon Olauson was born to Donald and Lyla (Horton) Olauson on March 9, 1966 in Seattle, Washington. He moved with his family to the Brookings area in August of 1974, where he attended and graduated from Rutland High School in May, 1984. He enrolled at South Dakota State University and worked various jobs in Brookings, including assistant manager at the Fry'n Pan Family Restaurant. There he met his future wife Sheila Rae Landsman. They lived in Fayetteville, North Carolina, where Erik obtained a B.S. Degree in Business Administration at the University of North Carolina, Pembroke. They moved to Huron, South Dakota, in 1992 where Erik was employed by Huron Regional Hospital as director of the dietary and food service department. In the spring of 1994 they moved, with their infant son, Zachery, to Hillsdale, Michigan, where Erik was employed by Marriott International (Hillsdale College) as a Director of Catering In 1997, a daughter, Elizabeth, was born. Erik Jon resigned his position at the College in 2008 and with Sheila Rae created their dream of being self employed. The couple created two companies, Bizzy Lizzy Bakery and SureLegs.com. Erik lived between their town homes in Hillsdale, Michigan, and White, South Dakota. Erik spent most of his time delivering and setting up new accounts with stores and universities throughout Michigan. During his growing-up years, Erik attended Lake Campbell Lutheran Church with his family. He, Sheila, and their children were members of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hillsdale, where Erik served in various capacities. He belonged to the Huron American Legion, and loved to contribute and help with local charitable events. He loved meeting new people and making special friends, but if you asked him his greatest achievement, it would be his children. Survivors include his wife, Sheila Rae, of Hillsdale, Michigan, and White, South Dakota; his son, Zachery Martin; his daughter, Elizabeth (Lizzy) Nicole; his mother, Lyla Olauson, of Brookings; his in-laws, William and Marlene Landsman, of Elkton, South Dakota; his brother, Aaron (Emily) Olauson, of Eagan, Minnesota; his grandmother, Grayce Horton; his special pets, Bullet and Emily; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Donald; and his grandparents, Lyle Horton, and Anton and Anna Olauson. In lieu of flowers, because of the graveside services, memorial gifts will be directed by the family to an education trust fund for his children. The account is set up at Dakota Bank of Brookings in the children's name.
