Obituary

Emma Dimit, age 91, of Brookings, died Saturday, September 13, 2014, at the United Living Community in Brookings. Funeral Services will be 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 18, 2014, at First Presbyterian Church in Brookings. Visitations will be from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday at Eidsness Funeral Home. Emma Holsinger Dimit was born on November 24, 1922, to George and Florence (Ashcom) Holsinger in Johnstown, PA. Emma attended school in Johnstown and graduated in 1940, with honors from Johnstown High School. After graduation, Emma attended one year at the Johnstown Branch of the University of Pittsburgh. She then transferred to Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where she graduated with honors in 1944. Emma married Robert Dimit on June 15, 1946. The couple lived in Johnstown for a short time before moving to Iowa in 1949. In 1952, Emma and Robert moved to Brookings where they lived from 1952-1956. At which time, they moved to Ohio. In 1965, Emma and Robert moved back to Brookings where she resided until the time of her death. Emma taught school for three years in Pennsylvania and was a substitute teacher in Columbus, Ohio and Volga, SD. From 1975-1985, she was employed as the manager of the SDSU Federal Credit Union. Emma was a talented poet and was named the South Dakota Poet of the year in 1989. She was one of nine South Dakota Centennial Poets and received prizes from the National and State Societies. Emma also had two books published. Emma was involved with numerous organizations including: South Dakota State Poetry Society, K-Wives, Dakota Sues, Faculty Women's Club, Ag Wives, GFWC, and served four years on the talent committee for South Dakota Girls State. She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church and loved to spend her time reading, gardening, or writing poetry. Emma wintered in Arizona for over 20 years. She taught line dancing in the clubhouse up until her last year there. Survivors include her children: Mary Anne Dimit-Buckley (Steve) of New Mexico, Robert Dimit (Jennifer) of New York, Beatty Dimit of Tennessee, and James Dimit of White, SD, two grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and sister, Jane. Memorials are preferred to First Presbyterian Church or to the Brookings Domestic Abuse Shelter.
