Elva E. Bishman, 96, died on Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at Trevilla Nursing Home in Minneapolis, Minnesota. A memorial service will be held in Minneapolis. Interment services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, July 5, at Greenwood Cemetery in Brookings. Elva was born February 17, 1907, to August and Marie Papka in White, South Dakota. She was raised on a farm near White by William and Rose Papka, her aunt and uncle. She graduated from White High School in 1924. On December 22, 1924, she married George E. Bishman at White. The Bishmans resided in Brookings where Elva worked at the Red Owl store as a butcher, the office of the Register of Deeds, and SDSU. She retired from The United Methodist Church where she worked as the secretary for many years. She belonged to the Brookings Firemans Auxiliary, and was a member of the Degree of Honor; a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for over fifty (50) years; and a member of the Brookings United Methodist Church for over 63 years. She is survived by one daughter, Deanna (Mike) McManus, of Minneapolis, MN; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two great great-grandchildren. Her husband; one daughter Betty Jean Kracht, two sisters, and one brother preceded her in death.
