Elnore Steffen, age 91, of Brookings, died Tuesday, March 24, 2015, at home. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, March 30, 2015, at Eidsness Funeral Home with burial to follow in Prairie Queen Cemetery at Nunda, SD. Visitations will be 3-5pm on Sunday at Eidsness Funeral Home. Elnore Steffen was born on a farm near Sinai, SD, on July 30, 1923, to Henry and Erma (Quam) Oines. She was baptized and confirmed at Sinai Lutheran Church. Elnore was educated at country school in Sinai. She later earned her GED at the age of 72. Elnore had one sister, Darlene, and one brother, Carmen. On January 26, 1945, Elnore was united in marriage to Willis Steffen at Madison, SD. Elnore and Willis lived on a farm east of Nunda. She enjoyed farm life, raising vegetables, flowers, and chickens. Elnore lost her husband, Willis in 1978 to cancer. She moved to Brookings where she became an apartment manager for 12 years. She also volunteered at the Brookings Community Cultural Center through the Green Thumb program and a volunteer for the Democratic Party. Elnore enjoyed researching and keeping the family Norwegian history current, from her great-grandparents to her grandchildren. She was always working on a crossword puzzle every evening while having a cup of coffee. Elnore loved sewing, baking cookies and donuts, embroidering on dish towels, and visiting with family and friends over a cup of coffee and cookies. Elnore was a member of the Sons of Norway and the Brookings Art Council. Elnore is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Carolyn (Marlon) Brandt of Elkton, SD; her grandchildren, Natalie Brandt of Brandon, SD, Janelle and Levi Brandt-Hentges of St. Louis Park, MN, and Allen Brandt of Minneapolis, MN; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willis; daughter, Patty; parents; her brother; and sister.
