Obituary

Elmer A. Smallfield, age 93, of Elkton, died Friday, August 27, 2004, at Brookview Manor in Brookings. Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Monday, August 30, 2004, at Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church in Elkton, with interment in the church cemetery. Visitations will be from 5-8 P.M. Sunday at Eidsness-Zink Funeral Chapel in Elkton. Elmer Adolph Smallfield was born March 21, 1911, in Moody County, South Dakota, to Albert and Lena (Heesch) Smallfield. He attended country school in Moody County. On October 5, 1941, he married Mabel Kramer at Elkton. They farmed north and northwest of Elkton until 1973 when they retired and moved into Elkton. They later moved to Brookings. Mabel died April 19, 2004. Elmer was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, and served on the church council and cemetery board. He was a member of the Farmers Union. He served for 21 years on the Farmers Union Oil Co-op board, the school board for five years, and the boards of the Farmers Pioneer Telephone Co-operative and the Farmers Creamery. He enjoyed watching sports and playing cards. He worked for Brookings County on various farm programs, including the A.S.C.S. Survivors include three sons: Duane (Linda) Smallfield of Elkton, James Smallfield of Elkton, and Ronald Smallfield of Sioux Falls; eight grandchildren: Ted, Tom, Amy, Brice, Brent, Brad, Brenna, and Brianne Smallfield; nine great-grandchildren; and a sister, Leona Olson, of Plattsburg, Missouri. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and three brothers: Herbert, Lloyd, and Harold Smallfield.
