Obituary

Ella L. Ollenburg, age 95, died Monday, November 13, 2006, at the United Retirement Center in Brookings. Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Thursday, November 16, 2006, at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Brookings, with interment in First Lutheran Cemetery. Visitations will be from 5-7 P.M. Wednesday at Eidsness Funeral Home, with a prayer service at 7:00 P.M. Ella L. Ollenburg was born November 22, 1910, in Hanson County, South Dakota, to John and Anna (Schumacher) Ollenburg. At the age of three months, her family moved to Mitchell, South Dakota. She attended grade school and high school in Mitchell, and graduated from Dakota Wesleyan University in June 1934. She also attended college at SDSU, the University of Wisconsin in Madison, and George Washington University in Washington, D.C. Ella was employed on the SDSU faculty as state extension 4-H agent from July 1956 until July 1976 when she retired. Prior to that position she held various positions with the U.S. Department of Agriculture as county, district, and state home supervisor; the Farmers Home Administration; two years as regional field home economics supervisor with R.E.A.; four years as Yankton County home supervisor; and from 1952 until 1956 as assistant professor of state extension home furnishings and management with NDSU at Fargo, before coming to Brookings. Following her retirement Ella enjoyed traveling, and she was actively involved in Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, A.H.E.A., S.D.E.A., A.A.U.W., Memorial Art Center Guild, Community Cultural Center, Brookings Country Club, Faculty Womens Club, Antique Club, City Bowling Association, N.A.R.F.E., and B.A.R.T.A. Survivors include cousins, Robert (Elaine) Ollenburg of Ventura, Iowa, and Helen Ollenburg of Fremont, Nebraska; and special friends, Glen and Sharon Anderegg, and Mildred Vargason, all of Brookings. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Clara; and brother, Elmer. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the 4-H Foundation or Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church.
