Ella L. DeGroot, age 93, of Brookings, formerly of Bruce, died Monday, April 9, 2007, at the Brookings Hospital in Brookings, South Dakota. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Friday, April 13, 2007, at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Brookings, with interment in Trinity Cemetery at Volga, South Dakota. Visitations will be from 4-7 P.M. Thursday at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings. Ella Louise (Weerts) DeGroot was born April 8, 1914, at Naper, Nebraska, to Frank and Ida (Eichmann) Weerts. She moved with her family to South Dakota when she was four years old. She attended school at Wentworth through the eighth grade, and graduated from Wentworth High School in 1932. On June 18, 1937, she married Leonard DeGroot at Wentworth. From 1940 until 1978, the DeGroots lived in Utah, where Ella worked at a print shop in Midvale. After their return to South Dakota in 1978, Ella worked in the bindery department for Reynolds Printing. Leonard died October 24, 1984. Ella was a member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Brookings. She was active in the Lutheran Womens Missionary Society, and the Lutheran Layman League. She enjoyed crocheting afghans and doilies, and doing other handwork. Survivors include her five daughters: DeAnna (Arlan) Braun of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Gloria Brimhall of Sandy, Utah, Eloise Rodgers of Ridgefield, Washington, Carol (Roger) Overbeck of Robins, Iowa, and Christine (Wayne) Mans of Bruce, South Dakota; 15 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; a brother, Edward (Margaret) Weerts, of Eau Claire, Wisconsin; and a sister, Laura (George) Amert, of Madison, South Dakota. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; five brothers: Albert, Martin, Arnold, Gerhard, and Louis Weerts; two sisters: Esther Lindholm and Helen Crane; an infant grandchild, Aaron Rodgers; and two sons-in-law: Wayne Brimhall and Robert Rodgers.
