She was one of six children born to Edward and Nellie (Rombough) Stubbs on the family farm. She attended the rural Rosehill Township school for the first through fifth grades. She completed grades six and seven in Snohomish, Washington, when her family moved to Washington state in 1929. They returned to rural Hand County two years later. Eleanor graduated from Wessington High School in 1936. During World War II, Eleanor worked for the hand County Ration office, and later for the Brookings County Ration office. Eleanor was transferred from Brookings to Greeley, Colorado, where she worked as a secretary to the commander of a German prisoner of war camp. On May 29, 1945, she married C. Donald Lombard in a simple ceremony at the Methodist church in Pipestone, Minnesota. At the end of World War II, the couple moved to Miller and later to Brookings. Eleanor worked for the Brookings Clinic for 45 years. After retiring, she worked for the Arlington School District where she enjoyed working with all the children. Survivors include three children: Donna (Larry) Jensen of Arlington, South Dakota, Tom (Peggy) Lombard and Dave (Lolly) Lombard, both of Brookings; four grandsons: Rick Jensen of Arlington, Mick Jensen and Chris and Nick Lombard all of Sioux Falls; four great-granddaughters: Sadie Jo, Isabelle, Eleanor, and Audrey; and her brother, Dwight Stubbs, of Wessington, South Dakota. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald, in 1973, her parents, and four sisters, Juanita, Fauneil, Margaret, and Audrey.
