Obituary

Elaine M. Olson, age 95, of Brookings, died Thursday, April 25, 2013, at the Brookings Hospital. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, April 27, 2013, at First Lutheran Church in Brookings. Following cremation, interment will be at First Lutheran Cemetery. Memorials should be directed to the SDSU Foundation, the South Dakota Art Museum, or the Brookings Public Library. Elaine Martha (Allen) Olson was born February 3, 1918, at Cameron, Wisconsin, to Carl C. and Mabel O. (Thomson) Allen. She attended Cameron Public Schools. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin in Madison in June 1941. She completed an internship in dietetics in 1942 at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. Elaine's first job was with the Western Reserve University Hospital and Clinics at Cleveland, Ohio. She was married to Oscar E. Olson on November 18, 1943, at Bremerton, Washington. At the close of World War II the Olsons returned to Madison, Wisconsin, to complete Oscar's graduate work. They moved to Pullman, Washington, Lansing, Michigan, and then to Brookings. Elaine was a dietitian at the Brookings Hospital for many years. Oscar died November 7, 1999. Elaine was a member of First Lutheran Church, the American Dietetics Association, the Wisconsin Alumni Association, the SDSU Faculty Women's Club, the South Dakota Art Museum Guild, and the Brookings Antique Club. Survivors include her two daughters: Karen Olson of Rapid City, South Dakota, and Kristin (Anthony) Sanchez of Alexandria, Virginia; two grandchildren: Adam Spellman of Omaha, Nebraska, and Katie (Joe) Hanigan of Dunlap, Iowa; and two great-grandchildren, Brennan Hanigan and Aiden Schuttinga.
