Effie Vermeulen, age 92, of Volga, died Tuesday, January 18, 2005, at Brookview Manor in Brookings. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Saturday, January 22, 2005, at the Volga Christian Reformed Church, with interment in Trinity Cemetery. Visitations will be from 5-7 P.M. Friday at Eidsness Funeral Chapel in Volga. Effie (Algra) Vermeulen was born August 12, 1912, near Volga, South Dakota, to Thomas and Sadie (Smol) Algra. She attended country schools. On June 21, 1946, she married Arie Vermeulen at Volga. She worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse at the Volga Hospital for many years. Arie died July 23, 1983. Effie was a member of the Volga Christian Reformed Church and the Dorcas Ladies Aid. She liked to read and enjoyed visiting her family, especially her nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews. She very much enjoyed working as Dr. Peekes assistant. Survivors include a sister, Johanna Statema, of Volga; two brothers-in-law: Arnold Van Maanen of Arlington and Jim Zuiderhof of Brookings; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a brother, Alfred Algra; and three sisters: Sadie Kleinjan, Dena Van Maanen, and Jennie Zuiderhof.
