Edna M. Gums, age 89, of Brookings, died Thursday, April 10, 2014, at the Neighborhoods at Brookview. Funeral services will be 11:00 A. M. Monday, April 14, 2014, at First Lutheran Church in Brookings. Visitations will precede services at the church. Interment will be 1:00 P.M. Tuesday, April 15, at the Medina Cemetery in Medina, North Dakota. Edna Marie (Brenniese) Gums was born February 14, 1925, at Streeter, North Dakota, the only child of Edward and Christina (Dewald) Brenniese. She was valedictorian of her senior class in Streeter. She graduated with a B.A. degree from General Beadle College in Madison, South Dakota. On December 7, 1947, Edna married Gideon Gums. They farmed at Streeter from 1947 until 1958. Edna taught for many years in North Dakota and South Dakota, ending her long career in Estelline as a Jr. High teacher. Gideon and Edna moved to Brookings in 1969 where Gideon was a barber for 15 years, until his death. Edna entered the nursing home in December 2010. Edna was a member of First Lutheran Church, Brookings Area Retired Teachers, and the Hospital Auxiliary. She was an amazing quilter, with a goal of making 30 quilts a year to give to her family for Christmas. She also donated quilts to local charities. Survivors include her four children: Pat (Rich) Hansen of Brookings, Neil (Mary) Gums of Aurora, South Dakota, Bryan (Julie) Gums of Brookings, and Lori (LeRoy) Smith of Colorado Springs, Colorado; nine grandchildren: Chad Hansen, Nicole Weissenfluh, Heidi Carstensen, Josh Gums, J.J. Gums, Kathy Gums, Kristie Gums, Amanda Gums, and Christina Hermanson; and six great-grandchildren: Tanner Hansen, Chloe Andre, Corbin Hansen, Evan Carstensen, Aiden Gums, and Aisha Gums. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
