Obituary

Edith Thompson Mulder, age 101, passed away on Saturday, August 19, 2023, at the Neighborhoods at Brookview in Brookings.  Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, August 26, 2023, at the Volga Christian Reformed Church.  Visitation will be from 5-8 P.M. on Friday, August 25th at Eidsness Funeral Chapel in Volga.

Edith Thompson Mulder was born on December 7, 1921, near Volga, SD, the daughter of Benjamin and Josie (Wiersma) VandenBerg.  Edith attended rural elementary school near Volga, and was the Valedictorian of the Volga High School class of 1940.  Edith was united in marriage to Glenn Thompson on March 21, 1946, in Volga.  While raising her family, she was employed by Dr. Peeke in the Volga Clinic and later as a bookkeeper at First National Bank in Volga.  Glenn died on February 6, 1963.  She married Raymond Mulder on June 13, 1974, in Volga. Raymond died on July 22, 1989.

Edith was an active member of the Christian Reformed Church.  She volunteered as a Sunday school teacher, member of the Ladies Aid, and the Bible study group.  She enjoyed bowling, golfing, taking walks, playing cards and marbles, gardening and especially spending time with family and friends. Edith also loved to watch sports including her favorite, the SDSU Jackrabbits and Sioux Valley Cossacks.  Edith's door was always open for those who needed a place to stay.  She also volunteered her time at the Brookings County Museum and delivering Meals on Wheels.

Survivors include her children, Ronald (Bonnie) Thompson of Volga, Kathleen Kraemer of OshKosh, WI, Scott Thompson of Bruce, Sheldon (Kris) Thompson of Volga, Keith (Kristi) Thompson of Rapid City; daughter-in-law, Penny Thompson of Plymouth, MN; six grandchildren: Eric, Stacy, Greg, Kip, Heather, and Melissa; three step-grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; step-children, Rodney Mulder of IA, and Jerry Mulder of GA; siblings, Mae O'Neil of LA, and Lois (Eugene) Kleinjan of Bruce; and numerous nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, one son, Wallace; siblings: Daniel, Jerry, Dora Wagenaar, Bertha Jensen, Esther Meyer-Anderson, Mildred Mans, Clara Mast, and Harriet Kuipers; and one daughter-in-law, Janelle Thompson.
