Obituary

Ed Schafer, age 83, of White, died Wednesday, October 13, 2010, at Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Memorial services will be held 2:00 P.M. Saturday, October 16, 2010, at St. Pauls Catholic Church in White. In lieu of flowers, memorials should be directed to the White Ambulance or the White Historical Society.

Edmund G. Schafer was born August 2, 1927, at Garrison, North Dakota, to Gustav and Beatrice (Kurtz) Schafer. He attended school in Garrison and Roseglen, North Dakota. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served from 1944 until 1949, during World War II. He joined the Army and served four years during the Korean War. After his discharge from the Army he moved to Sioux Falls where he was employed for twelve years at Sioux Falls Two-Way Radio as an electronics technician. In a previous marriage he had six children: Douglas, Cindy, Darryl, Jon, Jan, and Jay. He was united in marriage to Fayriene Yule on April 19, 1974. They moved to White in 1975, and he became employed at South Dakota State University as an electronics technician until his retirement in 1991. After his retirement he became a photographer for the Tri-City Star.

Ed was a life member of the V.F.W., and a member of the White Historical Society, Deuel Amateur Radio Club, Brookings Area Genealogy Society, White Community Club, and St. Pauls Catholic Church. His hobbies included amateur radio, receiving his license W0CWW in 1963. He also enjoyed woodworking, carpentry of all kinds, and photography. He especially enjoyed his hours with his granddaughter Kiana Campbell and their many trips together.

Survivors include his wife, Fayriene Schafer, of White; children: Steven (Sandy) Haase of Sioux Falls, Bryan Haase of Sioux Falls, Jan Campbell of Sioux Falls, Cindy (Larry) Fernholz of Wessington, South Dakota, Douglas (Marge) Schafer of Menno, South Dakota, Jon (Amy) Schafer of Sioux Falls, and Darryl (Lisa) Schafer of Sioux Falls; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; sisters and brothers: Lauretta Peterson of Sioux Falls, Dorothy (Ferd) Wolsky of Kent, Washington, Marian Melgard of Watertown, South Dakota, Delmonte (Flo) Schafer of Sioux Falls, Marsha (Junior) Klindworth of Garrison, North Dakota, and Johnny (Dorothy) Kolden of Garrison, North Dakota; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Jay.
