Obituary

Dwight 'Kelly' Miller, age 91, of Brookings, died Saturday, November 1, 2008, at the Brookings Hospital.  Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, November 5, at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings, with interment in Arlington City Cemetery, Arlington, South Dakota.  Visitations will be from 5-8 P.M. Tuesday at Eidsness Funeral Home.  Memorials will be sent to the Brookings Boys and Girls Club.

Dwight Oliver Miller was born December 25, 1916, at Arlington, South Dakota, the youngest of six children and only son of Ray and Clara (Liebsch) Miller.  He attended country school near Arlington.

On January 23, 1942, 'Kelly' married Frances Veenbaas in San Diego, California.  He served in WWII as a deuce and a half driver hauling supplies and ammunition in the European Theater for thirty months, from June 1, 1942 until his discharge November 10, 1945.  Kelly earned a Distinguished Unit Citation, Good Conduct Medal, and the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Service Medal with five oversea service bars.

Kelly and Fran started their Culligan Water Softener business before he entered the service.  Fran and two retired farmers ran it while Kelly was in the army.  They continued to operate the business when he returned until their retirement.

Fran passed away April 14, 1998.  After Fran died Kelly's sister Viola 'Ole' moved in with him and became his care giver due to his diminishing vision from macular degeneration.  Later he sold his house and moved into Brookview Manor, while 'Ole' moved into an apartment across the street so she could spend time with him daily.  Ole passed away March 19, 2007.

Kelly always enjoyed a good meal at any of the area restaurants or the Hy-Vee cafeteria.  He said the food at BVM was good and he always got more than he needed.  He especially enjoyed a warm sunny day when he could sit outside, or the fishing trips the staff took them on.  He also loved music, especially the songs from the 'Big band' era.  His one big love was helping through donations to the Brookings Boys and Girls Club.  He felt this was an especially worthy project and enjoyed the visits from Amber and her kids from the club when she would update him on the clubs projects, and also his visits to the club to see the kids in action.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Fran, his sisters: Ann Mulholland, Marge Shanks, 'the twins' Violet Converse and Viola Eldredge, and sister Grace who died at birth.  He is survived by numerous nieces, nephews and their families.
