Duane H. Gehring, age 60, of Brookings, died Tuesday, September 23, 2003, at his home. Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Saturday, September 27, at First Presbyterian Church in Brookings, with interment in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitations will be from 5-8 P.M. Friday at Eidsness Funeral Home and preceding services at the church on Saturday. The family requests that memorials be directed to McCrory Gardens, SDSU, Brookings. Duane Herbert Gehring was born July 3, 1943, at Parkston, South Dakota, to Herbert and Lenora (Hanselman) Gehring. He graduated from Parkston High School in 1961. He served in the South Dakota Air Guard in Sioux Falls from 1964 until 1970. On June 13, 1965, he married Betty Bitterman at Parkston. Duane worked for the state highway department in Mitchell from 1964 until 1970. In 1971 the family moved to Brookings, where Duane worked at 3M until 1998. Since then, he has been employed at the Fairfield Inn in Brookings. Duanes interests included gardening, bird-watching, woodworking, and traveling. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family. Survivors include his wife, Betty, of Brookings; three children: Scott (Suzy) Gehring and their children, Olivia and Weston; Glen (Gena) Gehring and their children Zach and Haley; and Jennifer (Scott) Hinricher and their daughter, Skylar, all of Brookings; a brother, Dale (Vickie) Gehring of Rochester, Minnesota, and their two daughters, Heather and Erin.
