Doug ?Bammer? Van Beek, age 49, of Brookings, died Sunday, July 9, 2006, at his home in Brookings, South Dakota. Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M. Thursday, July 13, 2006, at First Lutheran Church in Brookings, with interment in Trinity Cemetery at Volga. Visitations will be from 5-8 P.M. Wednesday at Eidsness Funeral Home. Douglas Alan Van Beek was born March 22, 1957, in Volga, South Dakota, to Laura (Schonewill) and Conrad Van Beek. He attended Volga Christian School, later graduating from Sioux Valley High School in Volga. He farmed in the Volga area with his father and then worked for Land O? Lakes in Volga. He also worked 19 years for Nielsen Electric in Brookings, South Dakota. Doug was one of the founding members and officers of Sioux River ABATE ( A Brotherhood for Awareness, Training and Education). Besides being active in ABATE, Doug was a motorcycle mechanic and builder. In addition to his love of motorcycles, he also loved cars, trucks, and most of all his family. Survivors include his life partner and soul-mate, Chris Schmidt of Brookings; special sons: David and Randy Schmidt of Flandreau and Mickey Schmidt of Brookings; mother, Laura (Bob) Mans of Volga; sisters: Marcia (Stephen) Moore of Champlin, Minnesota, Marilyn (Ron) Lunt of Watertown, Massachusetts, Bev (George) Cotton of Volga, and Lenae (Clint) Liddiard of Sioux Falls; special mother, Gwen Bjerke of Hadley, Minnesota; two step-brothers: Wayne (Chris) Mans and Gary Mans, both of Volga; nieces and nephews; brothers and sisters of Sioux River ABATE; and special friend ?Squeek?. He was preceded in death by his father; Chris?s father, Loren Pottratz; daughter-in-law, Jennifer Knudson; and granddaughter, Jayda Springer.
