Dorothy Marie Weeks age 93, passed away at the United Living Center in Brookings, South Dakota, on Tuesday October 18, 2016.
A Celebration of Life will take place at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 25, 2016, at Ascension Lutheran Church in Brookings, with a private family committal at Singsaas Lutheran Cemetery, rural Astoria. There will be no visitations. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Singsaas Lutheran Cemetery.
Dorothy was born in Minneapolis, MN on January 4, 1923. She spent her first two years at the Lutheran Inner Mission Society before being adopted by Henry and Marie Rogness in February 1925. Dorothy lived on the family farm with her parents in rural South Dakota. Dorothy was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Singsaas Lutheran Church. She attended elementary school at District 63 and continued her education at Astoria High School, graduating with the class of 1940.
She was united in marriage with Kenton Weeks at Singsaas Lutheran Church on March 17, 1944. She and Kenton built a home near her parents and worked the family farm from 1944 to 1968 when they moved to Brookings, SD and built a second home for their family. During their lives together they built a total of 4 homes . Dorothy was happiest when she had a house full of family and friends to spend time with and cook for. In the fall of 1969 she began working for the Brookings School District as a lunchroom assistant. Later she was promoted to the Kitchen Manager at the High School. In May of 1984 she became the Food Service Director for the Brookings School System and continued in that position until she retired in June 1988.
Kenton and Dorothy were blessed with six children. Kathleen (Don) Fjellestad , Kenwood (Ginny) Weeks, Melody (Denny) Sand, Sue Hofmeister, William (Shelleen) Weeks and Shari (David) Lane. Eight grandchildren, Laura Fjellestad Tjaden (Adam), Christopher Sand, Jamie Weeks Heetland (Rod), Sarah Fjellestad, Erica Weeks, Kasey Sand (Lisa), Tim Weeks and Amber Everson and 6 great grandchildren Karli and Austin Heetland, Brody and Devynn Reznechek, Harper and Eloise Sand.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband Kenton, her parents and one grandchild Christopher Sand.
