Obituary

Dorothy May Nesson, 89, of White, SD, died Sunday afternoon, January 19, 2014, at the White Healthcare Center. Her memorial service, led by Rev. David Knefelkamp, will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 31, 2014, at Zion Lutheran Church in White. Interment will be at a later date. Dorothy was born the youngest of three children at Brookings, SD, to Samuel and Aura (Bennett) Hewitt on November 27, 1924. She graduated from Volga High and worked in that community until her marriage to Robert L. Nesson on April 8, 1945. The young couple resided briefly in Roswell, NM, until Robert's discharge from the Army Air Force. Two children and three apartments later they ended up in White, their home for the next 51 years. She worked in a few retail positions and served a term on the board of the White Public Schools. In 1966 she began working as the business manager at the school and transitioned to the position of school secretary, giving her considerably more influence over the day-to-day operations of that institution, its staff and students. In 1987 she joined her husband in retirement. They reveled in their companionship and worked as partners in their many projects. After Robert's death in 2001, Dorothy moved to Sioux Falls, close to her son Steven and his family. She quickly found volunteer positions in the schools and hospital, making use of her experience. Failing health necessitated her move to the White Senio Living Center, a facility she helped establish, in 2009. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Earl Hewitt, sister Edith Fox, her beloved husband Robert, her youngest son Steven and daughter-in-law Darlene (Spencer) Nesson. Those who remain thankful for sharing her life are her oldest son Spencer of Huron and his children, Laura and Ben; her daughter Susan (Ronald) Christie of Lake Preston and their children Troy (Sara) and Stephanie; and daughter-in-law Julie (Steven) Nesson of Sioux Falls and their children Adam, Lexi (Tim) Kahnk and Carly (Tim) Fountain. Also surviving are great-grandchildren Kamra Christie, Jasmine Pieper, Brooklyn Christie, Amanda Kilber and Kaden Kilber as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
