Obituary

Dorothy Myers, 95, formerly of Brookings, passed away on Thursday, January 16, 2020 at the Homestead Rehabilitation Center in Lincoln, Nebraska.  Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 21, 2020, beginning at 10:00 A.M. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Brookings.  Burial will immediately follow the service at Greenwood Cemetery in Brookings.

Dorothy Jean Christensen Myers was born April 19, 1924 in Wapello, Idaho. Her parents were Willard Richard Christensen and Della Sarah Allen. Jean passed away on Thursday, January 16, 2020, at Homestead Rehabilitation Center, Lincoln, Nebraska, at the age of 95 years with her son, Wayne, by her side.

Jean was the ninth child born in her parents' family of thirteen children. She grew up in rural Idaho and was often responsible for helping her mother care for her younger siblings. Jean met her husband, Victor Ira Myers, at a dance while living in Idaho. They were married on April 20, 1940, in Paris, Idaho. As Vic pursued his education and later entered the work force, Jean and Vic moved around a bit, living in Gooding and Moscow, Idaho; Portland, Oregon; Reno, Nevada; Weslaco, Texas; and Brookings, South Dakota. Jean and Vic raised a family of three sons: Gary Allen Myers, Douglas Richard Myers, and Wayne Victor Myers. They also welcomed a foreign exchange student into their family, Mir Aqa Kabiri, when they lived in Weslaco, Texas. Beginning in 1966, they hosted the daughter of an Afghan diplomat, Sultana Ayubi, who soon became like a daughter to them. Jean and Vic continued their relationship with Mir Aqa and Sultana for many years after they were no longer in their home.

Jean received her BA degree in Spanish from South Dakota State University in 1971, graduating with honors.

She loved to travel with her husband and together they visited 18 countries, mostly in connection with Vic's work. Jean was involved with international organizations, meals programs for senior citizens, and the Brookings Area Genealogical Society. She also volunteered at the Brookings Family History Center of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Jean was an active member of the L.D.S. Church and served in various capacities in the Primary, Sunday School, and Relief Society organizations throughout her adult life. She served a full time mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints at the Chicago Illinois Temple for 18 months.

Jean lived an exemplary life of kindness, service, compassion, charity, and love for everyone she knew. It was a joy to be in her presence. Mother Teresa once said: "Let no one ever come to you without leaving better and happier. Be the living expression of God's kindness: Kindness in your face, kindness in your eyes, kindness in your smile." This is how Jean lived. This is why her friends and family love her and will deeply miss her.

Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Victor Ira Myers, two of her sons, Gary Allen Myers and Douglas Richard Myers, and her granddaughter, Christa Myers, her parents and eleven of her twelve siblings. She is survived by her son, Wayne Victor Myers (Jeri) of Marion, North Carolina, grandchildren: Julie and Misty (Gary); Douglas Richard (Doug); Sarah, Benjamin, Jared, and Samuel (Wayne); great-grandchildren, her brother, Jesse Corwin Christensen (Ruby), and nieces and nephews.
