Dorothy Hanson, age 76, of Brookings, died Sunday, December 28, 2003, at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, December 31, 2003, at First Lutheran Church in Brookings with interment in First Lutheran Cemetery at Volga. Visitations will be from 5-8 P.M. Tuesday at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings. Dorothy Mavis (Quam) Hanson was born May 19, 1927, at Brookings, South Dakota. to Alvin and Helen (Oines) Quam. She attended country school near Sinai. She worked in Madison for a year before marrying Ellsworth L. Hanson on December 31, 1945, in Pipestone, Minnesota. After their marriage, the couple lived in Volga and later moved to a farm near Volga. They moved back to town in 1977 and later moved to Brookings. Ellsworth died May 6, 1998. Dorothy was a member of First Lutheran Church in Brookings. She enjoyed country music, rodeos, playing cards, and spending time with her family. Survivors include six children: Kathleen (Festus) Demaray of Hermosa, South Dakota, Nancy (Dennis) Lanser of Huron, South Dakota, Bradley (Pam) Hanson of Keystone, South Dakota, Paulette (Tom) Bunker of Arlington, South Dakota, Joan (Doug) Tveito of Volga, South Dakota, and Jennifer (Kenny) Brau of Amarillo, Texas; 21 grandchildren: Scott, Stacy, Laricia, LaVae, Carl, Joe, Shannon, Tonya, Steve, Tony, Troy, Paul, Todd, Tami, Katie, Toby, Mandi, Susie, Dustin, Austin, and Caden; honorary grandchildren, Steve and Deanne Rentsch; 25 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Marlene (Dan) Moeller of Keystone, and Burdean (Duane) Schley of Huron; and a brother, Merlin Quam, of Wolsey, South Dakota. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two children, Steven and Tammy; and a granddaughter, Nicole Hanson.
