Dorothy Nelson Haas was born March 18, 1913 in Chelsea, South Dakota. After graduating from Cresbard High School, she attended South Dakota State where she studied pharmacy. After undergraduate studies, she went on to complete a Masters in Pharmaceutical Science, the first woman to earn this degree from SDSU (1937). Dottie enjoyed her college years immensely and made many lifelong friends. There she also met Phillips B. Haas of Volga. The two were married in Logan, Utah in the fall of 1937 where he completed graduate studies in Wildlife Management. Later the couple returned to South Dakota, settling in Volga where Phil joined his father in the lumber business. Together the couple had four children: Stephen N. Haas, M.D. (Hermosa, married to Judy); Kathy L. Roberts (Hudson, Wisconsin, married to Charles); Jean H. Saballus (Easton, Maryland, married to Don); and the Rev. Jerry P. Haas (Nashville, Tennessee, married to Donna). Besides her children and their spouses, Dorothy is survived by six grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren; nephews Howard Nelson, Dennis and Dave Wolfe; a niece LaVonne Brick; numerous friends and acquaintances. Dorothy loved her family very much, inspiring children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in many ways and always encouraging us to do our best. She loved traveling and she always wanted to learn as much as she could about everything. Earlier in her life, she was actively engaged as a volunteer in the community with particular interests in education and programs for people with developmental disabilities. She was an active member of Olivet Presbyterian Church in Volga, P.E.O., and various other clubs and organizations. The family is extremely grateful to the good people of Volga who provided so much support to her, including the staff of Dakota Sun. You were there when we were not able to be; thank you! In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in her memory to South Dakota State University School of Pharmacy (www.sdsufoundation.org); or to Advance (www.advancebkg.info). A memorial service for Dorothy N. Haas will be held Saturday, January 22, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. the Eidsness Funeral Home in Volga, Ann Spitzenberger presiding. Following the service friends may greet the family over lunch at the Volga Community Center.
