Dorothy Even, 93, of Brookings, passed away on Friday, October 18, 2019, at the Brooking Hospital. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 22, 2019, at GracePoint Wesleyan Church in Brookings, beginning at 10:00 A.M. Interment will immediately follow the service at Greenwood Cemetery in Brookings. A time of visitation will be held the evening prior to services, Monday, October 21, 2019, at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M.
Dorothy was born on March 31, 1926 to Roy and Henrietta McCuen of Brookings, South Dakota. She attended rural school through 8th grade, and then graduated from Brookings High School in 1944. Dorothy attended General Beadle Teacher's College where she earned a teaching degree for rural school in Madison, South Dakota.
On September 16, 1946, Dorothy married Donald Melvin Even. She became a member of the Elkton Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school, vacation bible school, and was active in various church oraganizations, as well as singing solos and duets during services.
Dorothy started and organized the "Up and At It" Extension Club for Brookings County, and work on their dairy farm. She worked for the Shriver Department Store, and then the Mariott in the Student Union for several years. Dorothy finished her career at Walmart where she retired after 22 years of service. She enjoyed baking bread and making cakes for various functions, and was a superior seamstress. Dorothy also greatly enjoyed time spent with all of her grandchildren.
Dorothy and Don have 4 children, Doug (Carol), of Elkton, SD, Dennis, of Tucson, AZ, David (Diane) of Sartell, MN, and Stuart (Deb) of Brookings, SD; 18 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Shirley Adams; an a brother, Donald McCuen.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband and best friend, Donald Even; two grandchildren: Troy and Travice; her parents; and one sister, Bethyl Lamp.
