Obituary

Doris Fay (Umberger) Van Maanen, age 80, passed away Saturday, November 27th at Avera Heart Hospital, Sioux Falls. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, December 1, 2010, at First Lutheran Church of Volga. Visitation will be Tuesday, November 30, 2010, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Eidsness Funeral Chapel in Volga, with family present.

Doris Umberger was born December 23, 1929 to John and Dorothy (Templin) Umberger in Lebanon, PA. She attended school in Annville, PA and graduated in 1947. In 1952, she entered the US Navy(Waves- Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) and served as a link trainer instructor. Doris served in the Korean war and was honorably discharged in April of 1955. While in the Navy, she met Roy Van Maanen of Bruce. Roy and Doris were married on April 3, 1955 and made their home in Colton. They later moved to Volga, where they resided for 53 years. Roy and Doris had two children, Steven and Dawn.

Doris worked as a grocery clerk; a clerk at Brost's fabric store; a clerk at Shriver's department store; as a cook at Elaine's Cafe; and as a child care provider for many years. She was a member of First Lutheran Church of Volga, where for many years, she enjoyed teaching Sunday school, Vacation Bible school and participating in the choir. Doris was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

Doris was an avid reader. She loved playing cards and board games, and spending time on the computer. Her most recent hobby was creating jewelry. Doris loved visiting with her friends and spending time with family, especially her four great-grandchildren.

Doris is survived by her son Steve(Pam) Van Maanen of Volga, her daughter Dawn(Carl) Vitters of Madison, NH; three grandchildren, Niki(Chad) Smidt of Brookings; Beth(Chris) Artz of Baltic; and Megan Vitters of Madison, NH; four great- grandchildren, Tayen and Delaney Smidt, Cameran and Kellen Artz; two brothers Kenneth(Esther) Umberger and Bruce Umberger of Palmyra, PA; two sisters Janice(Earl) Peiffer and Elaine(Patrick)Lynch of Myerstown, PA; a brother-in-law, Kenneth(Jane) Van Maanen Brookings, SD; and two sisters-in-law Sylvia(Eugene) Heuer of Phoenix, AZ; and Lois Van Maanen of Davenport, IA; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Roy; her brother and sister-in-law Richard(Betty) Umberger; sister-in-law Gladys Umberger; and brother-in-law, Walter Van Maanen.
