Obituary

Doris Nelson, age 70, of Brookings, died Monday, November 22, 2004, at the Brookings Hospital. Memorial services will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday, November 27, at the Morningside Community Church, preceded by interment at Greenwood Cemetery. Visitations will be from 5-7 P.M. Friday at Eidsness Funeral Home. Doris Ann (Atkins) Nelson was born January 19, 1934, in Moody County, South Dakota, to Basil and Rachel (Gilder) Atkins. She grew up on farms in the Brookings area, and graduated from Brookings High School in 1952. During high school she worked at various jobs in Brookings, including at a caf, in private homes, and in retail stores. On June 15, 1952, she married Curtis E. Nelson in Brookings. The Nelsons farmed near Brookings, and moved into town in 2002. As a member of Morningside Community Church, Doris was very involved in church activities including as a Sunday School teacher and prayer warrior. She was involved in 4-H and extension clubs, and enjoyed gardening and helping and working with people. Survivors include her husband, Curtis E. Nelson, of Brookings; four children: Darrell (Darleen) Nelson of Brookings, Greg (Carol) Nelson of Mankato, Minnesota, Darlis Coleman of Brookings, and Todd (Cheryl) Nelson of Aurora, South Dakota; nine grandchildren: Micki Heimer and Eric, Darred, Darren, Darci, Darres, Darby, Chandra, and Casey Nelson; two great-grandchildren: Brady and Jayci Heimer; and six brothers and sisters: Donald (Evelyn) Atkins of Carver, Minnesota, Arlene Hinseth of Bloomington, Minnesota, Gordon (Rose) Atkins of Schamburg, Illinois, Carol Morton of Chaska, Minnesota, Edie Riggs of Brookings, and Gladys (Donald) Brown of Smithville, Maryland. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Donna; and a son-in-law, Ken Coleman.
