Doris Van Maanen, age 95, of Volga, went to her heavenly home on Thursday, December 12, 2019, at The Neighborhoods at Brookview surrounded by her loving family. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 19, 2019, at the First Reformed Church in Volga, beginning at 10:30 A.M. Burial will immediately follow the service at Trinity Cemetery in Volga. A time of visitation will be held at the First Reformed Church the evening prior to services, on Wednesday, December 18, 2019, from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M.
Doris (Wiersma) Van Maanen was born on October 18, 1924, to John and Niesje (Kleinjan) Wiersma on a farm near Volga South Dakota. Her parents immigrated to the United States from the Netherlands as children when they were seven and fourteen. Both parents settled in northwest Iowa, but eventually moved to eastern South Dakota where they met and were married for 62 years. Doris was the next to the youngest of five children. Doris attended grade schools in the Volga area, and worked in the home of Dr. Peeke while attending Volga High School and graduated in 1941. She attended South Dakota State University, Northern State, Aberdeen, and Dakota State, Madison, and graduated with a teaching degree from Dakota State in Madison. Doris taught at country schools in the Volga area throughout her career.
Doris married Edward G. Van Maanen on January 14, 1948 in Volga. The couple farmed in the Volga-Arlington area and purchased a farm in Bangor Township, living there for 45 years. In 1997 Edward and Doris moved to Volga. They adopted three children: David Allen Van Maanen, of Charleston, South Carolina, Donald Wayne Van Maanen, and Carol Marie (Van Maanen) Fryer, of Volga. Doris was an excellent seamstress, and worked for several clients as a Home Health Aide in the area.
Doris was baptized in 1925, and was an active member of the First Reformed Church of Volga since birth. She was the church organist in the 1950s, and continued playing organ for services for many years. When a piano was purchased for worship services, she was the first regular piano player. She also gave piano lessons in her home to ten students. Doris taught Vacation Bible School and Sunday School classes. Doris served as an officer and on different committees with the local Ladies organization of RCW and also served as a Classical officer on the Spiritual Live Commttee. She was also a member of the Bola Jolly Bunch Extension Club for many years.
Preceding Doris in death were her parents; her husband, Edward in 2002; a son, Donald Van Maanen; a sister, Mary Vander Wal; and brothers Daniel, John L., and Frank Wiersma.
Survivors include a son, David (Karen), of Charelston, South Carolina; a daughter, Carol (Jim) Fryer, of Volga; 8 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Pat Wiersma, of Tuscon, AZ, and VernaMae Van Maanen, of Volga; a brother-in-law, Henry G. Van Maanen, of Volga; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
