After graduating from Brookings High School in 1948, she worked as a secretary for Governor George T. Mickelson in Pierre and then for Sokota Hybrid Seed Co. in Brookings. She married Glen Nachtigal, a Sokota salesman, on March 6, 1955, in Brookings. After raising five children, she enrolled at South Dakota State University and graduated in 1985 with honors with a bachelor of arts degree in English and a minor in Spanish. Doreen and Glen enjoyed traveling extensively together thanks to daughter Jane's tenure with Northwest Airlines. She also enjoyed playing bridge with good friends in several clubs for many years and was an active member of OEO Extension Club for more than 55 years. She and Glen were charter members of Ascension Lutheran Church, which was founded in 1962. Doreen was proud that her alma mater named the Nachtigals as the South Dakota State University Family of the Year in 2005. Doreen wrote, "I have had an extremely good life. While I cannot think of any major accomplishments I can take credit for, my legacy is not property or valuables. What I leave to the world is my proudest and most precious gift - my five kids. They are kind, generous, honest and honorable people. They have given me so many memories. They have shown kindness and consideration to animals as well as people in need. I am so proud of them." She was also extremely proud of her seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She is survived by her husband Glen, of the home; daughters: Nancy Nightengale of Henderson, NV and Jane Eastlund (Dale) of Bloomington, MN; three sons: Jim (Susan) of Holden, MA; Jerry (Ann) of Sioux Falls, SD, and Jon of Albuquerque, NM; seven grandchildren: Alysha Langstraat and Ryan, Reid, Jack and Libby Nachtigal, and Kate and Chris Eastlund; two great-grandchildren: Carson and Grady Langstraat; sisters Dawn Winkleman (Harley) of Dumas, TX and Janice Raske of Brookings, SD.
