Donald M. Even, age 91, of Brookings, died Wednesday, September 2, 2015, at the United Living Community in Brookings. Funeral services will be10:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 9, 2015, at GracePoint Wesleyan Church in Brookings, with interment and military rites at Greenwood Cemetery. Visitations will be from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday at Eidsness Funeral Home. Donald Melvin Even was born April 29, 1924, at Elkton, South Dakota, to Harry and Anna (Wiese) Even. He attended country school for the first eight grades and attended Brookings High School. He worked on the family farm with his father until he was drafted into the Army in June 1945, but chose to serve in the Navy instead. He served on the destroyer John R. Pierce and was stationed on a hospital ship in Oakland, California, until August 1946. Don became a member of the Baptist Church in Elkton and served as a Deacon. On September 16, 1946, he married Dorothy McCuen at Lake Benton, Minnesota. Don farmed near Elkton and started their dairy and poultry business where they sold milk and eggs. He was a Federal Crop Insurance adjustor for a few years, then moved to Brookings in 1982 and custom farmed for several years before retiring. He enjoyed watching the Minnesota Vikings and Twins and doing crossword puzzles daily. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy, of Brookings; four sons: Doug (Carol) Even of Elkton, Dennis Even of Tucson, Arizona, David (Diane) Even of St. Cloud, Minnesota, and Stuart (Deb) Even of Brookings; 18 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert (Gloria) Even, of Elkton; and a sister, Marge (Tom) Hendrickson, of Tucson, Arizona. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Kenneth; and two grandchildren, Troy and Travice.
