Donald R. Egeberg, age 66, of Volga, died Thursday, April 30, 2009, at Avera-McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, after a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, May 5, 2009, at First Lutheran Church in Volga, with interment in the church cemetery. Visitations will be from 5-8 P.M. Monday at Eidsness Funeral Chapel in Volga.

Donald Ray Egeberg was born May 15, 1942, at Brookings, South Dakota, to Raymond E. and Irene (Mattila) Egeberg. He attended country school near Bruce. He began shearing sheep at age 15 with his dad, and also worked construction, hauled gravel, worked as a plumber, and painted many houses and farm buildings in the area. On July 3, 1962, he married Barbara Johnson at Pipestone, Minnesota.

Don enjoyed horseback riding, fishing, hunting, spending time with family and friends, telling stories about his life, and telling jokes. He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Volga.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Barb Egeberg, of Volga; four children: Linda (Tim) Van Maanen of Volga, Patti (Randy) Novak, of Volga, Cheryl Egeberg of Brookings, and Brian Egeberg of Brookings; five grandchildren: Sarah and Jodi Van Maanen, Ryan and Riley Novak, and Tanner Wolf; his mother, Irene Egeberg, of Volga; two sisters: Barb (Jim) Hathaway of Sioux Falls, and Janice Guthmiller of Yankton; a brother, Jim (Peggy) Egeberg of Arlington; many nieces and nephews; and a special aunt and great friend, Esther Iwanaki, of Volga. Don was preceded in death by his father, Raymond; a sister, Helen Alexander; and a grandson, Tyler Van Maanen.
