Dolores Ostroot, age 98, of Brookings, passed away Sunday, March 08, 2020, at the Estelline Nursing and Care Center in Estelline, SD. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Friday, March 13, 2020, at Ascension Lutheran Church in Brookings with burial to follow at First Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 P.M. Thursday, March 12, 2020, at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings.
Dolores Ostroot was born July 29, 1921, to Claude and Jane (Cleveland) Butterfield in Montrose, SD. She attended school in Montrose and graduated in 1939. After graduation, Dolores attended Northern State College, where she received her Teaching Certificate. Dolores taught first and second grades at Geddes, SD, for three years. It was in Geddes that Dolores met Ken Ostroot. While Ken was in the war, Dolores moved to Washington D.C. in 1944.
On November 11, 1945, Dolores married Kenneth J. Ostroot at Montrose, SD. After their marriage, Dolores worked for the Greater South Dakota Association in Huron, and then as a Legal Secretary in Canton, SD. In 1961, the couple moved to Brookings, where Dolores worked as an Income Tax Preparer.
Dolores and Kenneth were Charter members of Ascension Lutheran Church. She served as the first Ascension Lutheran Church Women's President. Dolores was a member of PEO, Eastern Star, Hospital Auxiliary, and the Brookings Art Council. She loved to play cards, Dominos, and was a lifelong supporter of Jackrabbit Athletics.
Survivors include her daughter, Linda (Butch) Salmonson of Estelline; granddaughter, Stephanie (Matt) Bebensee; great-grandchildren, Mason and Sydney Bebensee, all of Brookings; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and siblings.
