On the evening of December 21 ^st , Dirk passed away lovingly surrounded by close family at the age of 66 in Brookings, South Dakota. During this winter solstice, the radiant light of Dirk waned while the brilliant illumination of the rare Christmas Star shone overhead.

Born November 18 ^th , 1954 at Fort Dix in Trenton, New Jersey, Dirk was the oldest of 8 children in a military family that adventured throughout the United States. The family ultimately settled in Camden-Wyoming, Delaware and Dirk graduated from Caesar Rodney High School. Following graduation, Dirk worked with his father to build Ray's Plumbing & Heating in Woodside, Delaware. In 1993, he moved his family to South Dakota. He worked as a Project Manager for Hander Plumbing in Sioux Falls until his retirement to Brookings.

Dirk worked incredibly hard from a young age. His father instilled a diligence that each job, large or small, was completed thoroughly and with integrity. Dirk's persistent dedication elevated those around him, both family and co-worker. In moments of relaxation, Dirk enjoyed riding and working on Harley Davidsons. He was a yearly attendant of the Sturgis Bike Rally with his wife, Barb. He found ease with a good Caribbean jerk meal, cigar, or warm sand between his toes. An intensely private man, his stoic nature was often broken with a gentle laugh or sly wink.

In death, Dirk is reunited with his parents, Ray and Helen, and his grandson, Braxton. His loss is experienced by his siblings: Mary (Tracy, deceased), Corey, Lisa (Henry), Dale (Peter), Tina (Jim), Michelle (Nick), and Craig (Tammy). His love and affection were felt by his wife, Barb. His legacy will carry on in the example absorbed by his children: Nick (Valerie), Kris (Kara), Jeremy (Anna), Damien (Chrissy), Travis (Kassi), Adam, and Brooke (Aaron). Dirk's memory will persist through his ultimate joy, his grandchildren: Layla, Harrison, Piper, Tanner, Barrett, Eliana, Hunter, Caleb, and Emelia.
