Dean B. Christie, age 93, of Brookings, died Saturday, February 25, 2017, at the Brookings Hospital. Funeral Services will be 2:00 P.M. Friday, March 3, 2017, at the First United Methodist Church in Brookings with burial to follow in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitations will be 5-7 P.M. on Thursday at Eidsness Funeral Home with an Order of Eastern Star Service and Masonic Service starting at 7:00 P.M.
Dean Birdett Christie was born May 3, 1923, in Brookings to Calvin and Alta (Palmer) Christie. He attended Medary Elementary School and graduated from Brookings High School in 1941. After graduation, Dean attended SDSU until he entered the United States Navy in 1943. He faithfully served his country until his discharge in 1947. On December 31, 1950, Dean married Helen Langendorfer in Foley, SD. The couple moved to the family farm south of Brookings, where Dean farmed until his retirement in 1988. Following his retirement, Dean went to work for Coast To Coast and later True Value until he was 85 years old.
Dean was active in many organizations including: First United Methodist Church, American Legion, 40 & 8, VFW, Brookings Masonic Lodge, El Riad Shrine, Brookings Shrine Club, Order of Easter Star, and Golden K Kiwanis Club. Dean enjoyed reading, gardening, and spending time outside on the farm.
Survivors include; a daughter, Joy (Gary) Griesse of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; two sons: Gary Christie of Brookings and Scott (Julie) Christie of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; six grandchildren: Trent (Sarah), Nathan (Becca), Derek (Libby), and Tyson (Teri) Griesse, and Marisa and Ryan Christie; ten great-grandchildren: Kiley, Sean, Sophia, Jordan, Cole, Hudson, Beau, Leo, Wyatt, and Jase; and numerous nieces and nephews. Dean was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Helen; and brother, Craig.
