Darwin Johnson, age 89, of Brookings, passed away on Wednesday, October 18, 2023, at his home.  Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday, October 25, 2023, at Bethel Baptist Church in Brookings.  Visitation will be from 5-7 P.M. on Tuesday, October 24th at Eidsness Funeral Home.

Darwin Johnson was born on August 17, 1934, to Chris and Esther C. (Engberg) Johnson.  Darwin grew up in Kingsbury County, South Dakota, graduating from Lake Preston High School.  Darwin was confirmed at Lake Whitewood Lutheran Church in Arlington, South Dakota.

On August 27, 1959, Darwin was united in marriage to LaVonne (Kemp) Johnson in Rapid City, South Dakota.  LaVonne passed away on December 31, 2016.

Throughout his younger years, Darwin owned a landscaping and sod business, drove truck, and worked for the Star Tribune out of the Brookings location.  He also owned  Little D's Service in Lake Preston.  Upon retiring, Darwin worked for Carquest delivering parts.

Darwin was a skilled craftsman and could fix just about anything.  He loved to tinker with different projects and was especially proficient at woodworking.  Darwin also enjoyed watching various sports including the Minnesota Twins, basketball games, and all-star wrestling.

Darwin is survived by his children: DeWayne (Johnson) Woods, of Sioux Falls, SD, Julie (Jim) Colby, of Volga, SD, Donovan (Lyn) Johnson, of Brookings, SD, and Darin Johnson, of Brookings, SD; his grandchildren: Rollie and Jason Johnson, Kelly Stevens, and Ashley (Jeremy) Janssen; two great grandchildren and four step grandchildren; and brother-in-law Walter (Junior) (Wanda) Antijunti.

He is preceded in death by his loving wife, LaVonne; his daughter-in-law, Melinda; and his grandson, Christopher.
