Daniel Krein, 72, died Saturday, June 14, 2003, at his home in Brookings, South Dakota. Memorial services will be 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at the First Assembly of God in Brookings. Interment will follow at a later date at Newell, South Dakota. Daniel Krein was born May 17, 1931, at Tuttle, North Dakota, to Daniel and Magdalena (Schremser) Krein. He moved with his family to South Dakota at a young age. He attended school at Newell, Belle Fourche, and District 59 at Astoria. He worked in various capacities as a farm and ranch hand. On June 16, 2001, he married Helen Commer at Brookings. Daniel attended First Assembly of God in Brookings. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and belonged to various outdoor organizations. He also enjoyed reading western novels. Survivors include his wife, Helen, of Brookings; a step-son, Mark Commer of Brookings; three step-daughters: Shirley (Jack) McComas of Brookings, Karen (Kenneth) Chaney of Brookings, and JoAnn (Larry) Theede of Bethel, Minnesota; five sisters: Esther Redanz of Kansas City, Missouri, Magdalena Ollila of Sandstone, Minnesota, Alice Johnson of Astoria, South Dakota, Lillie Sagmoe of Brookings, and Christina Hake of Youngstown, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews including those locally: Richard Johnson of Astoria, Diane Johnson of Flandreau, Michael Johnson of Brookings, Robert Krein of White, Jonathan Krein of Brookings, Karen Elverud of Rapid City, and Larry Sagmoe of Brookings. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers: Albert and Jonathan Krein.
