Dale E. Nelson, age 85, of Volga, passed away Friday, May 23, 2014, at the Neighborhoods at Brookview in Brookings. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 27, 2014, at First Lutheran Church in Volga, with interment in the church cemetery. Visitations will be from 4-7 p.m. Monday at Eidsness Funeral Chapel in Volga. Dale Eugene Nelson was born June 16, 1928, at Arlington, South Dakota. He graduated from Arlington High School in 1946. He married Avis Dybdahl in 1949. She passed away in 2005. They farmed in the Volga area for many years and retired in Volga. They had seven children. Dale was involved in many local organizations. He was an active supporter of the Sioux Valley Cossacks and was "Ivan the Cossack" one year. Fishing, coffee, and cards were some of his favorite pastimes. Dale is survived by six children: David (Lynette) of Volga; Debbie Koch of Sioux Falls; Jon (Linda) of Brookings; Jane Nelson of Volga; Tim (Nancy) of Bruce; and Terri (Jim) Van Erem of Brookings. Dale especially enjoyed his time with his eight grandchildren: Christine (Bruce) Kreutner, Erin Nelson, Nicole (Troy) Herrig, Jodi (Maurice) Cogle, Jared Nelson, Alyssa Nelson, Amber Nelson, and Haley Van Erem. He is also survived by six great-grandchildren: Brianna and Tyler Kreutner, Dylan and Blake Herrig, and Elyse and Ava Cogle. He was preceded in death by his wife Avis; son Tony; son-in-law, Gene Koch; parents; and three brothers.
