Obituary

Dahl D. Hougland, age 77, of Brookings, died Friday, September 5, 2008, at the Brookings Hospital. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, September 10, 2008, at the First United Methodist Church in Brookings, with military rites and interment at Greenwood Cemetery. Visitations will be from 5-8 P.M. Tuesday at Eidsness Funeral Home.
Dahl Duese Hougland was born March 19, 1931, at Wessington Springs, South Dakota, to Wayne E. and Dolores (Wilson) Hougland. He attended country schools and graduated from Lake Preston High School in 1951. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict from June 1951 until June 1955. On December 21, 1952, he married Lorene Thompson at Colman, South Dakota. Dahl studied mechanics and carpentry at Southern State College in Springfield from 1955 until 1959. He worked in building construction for several years before becoming a custodian at South Dakota State University. He worked at Lloyds Amoco in Brookings for fourteen years and began working for the Brookings school system as a custodian in February 1979. He retired in 1996. Lorene died October 5, 1999.
Dahl was a member of First United Methodist Church, American Legion, North American Hunting Club, and the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and National Rifle Association. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, reading, traveling, woodworking, and having coffee with his friends. He had received several trophies in archery.
Survivors include three sons: Steven (Sherrie) Hougland of Brookings, Daniel Hougland of Brookings, and Kevin Wendell (Linda) Hougland, of Brookings; a daughter: Gaylene (Kevin) Gebhardt, of Jamestown, North Dakota; seven grandchildren: Melissa (Robby) Waligoske, Jessica (Nate Phillips) Hougland, Travis Hougland, Aaron Carsrud, Tommy Hougland, Adam Gebhardt, and Joey Gebhardt; two great-granddaughters: Abigail Waligoske, and ZoeyJane Phillips; a twin brother, Dihl (Pat) Hougland, of Huron, South Dakota; step-mother, Ellen Hougland, of Huron, South Dakota; and many nieces and nephews and other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and three brothers: Merle, Ronald, and Berkley Hougland.
