Obituary

Clayton K. Sloat, 93, of Brookings, passed away on Monday, June 8, 2020, at Ava's House in Sioux Falls.  There will be a public visitation on Friday, June 12, 2020, from 10:00 A.M. until 5:00 P.M. at Eidsness Funeral Home.  A private family service will be held on Saturday, June 13, 2020, at 10:30 A.M. at Eidsness Funeral Home.  The family service will be live-streamed on the Eidsness Funeral Home Facebook page during the time of the service.  Due to the current restrictions at Black Hills National Cemetery, a committal service will be held at 10:30 A.M. (MT) on Monday, June 15 th at Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City. A private burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery.

Clayton K. Sloat was born on June 27, 1926, in Gettysburg, South Dakota, the son of Fred and Alice (Lowe) Sloat.

Clayton received his education in Potter County, Codington County, and was a graduate of the Brookings High School in 1944. Clayton faithfully served his country during WWII from October of 1944 until November of 1946.  After he returned home, Clayton continued his education at South Dakota State University, and received his Bachelor of Science degree in Dairy Science.  He was united in marriage to Marlys Wiese on December 17, 1946, in Elkton, South Dakota.  Clayton taught Ag skills for farmers in Huron for several years and was then employed as an Ag Salesman for the next 35 years.  During his time in Huron, Clayton also owned and operated a gas station with Don Johnson.  In his later years, Clayton began working at Daktronics as a "retirement gig," which spanned nearly 20 years and ended with him retiring at the age of 90.  Marlys died in February of 2012.

Clayton was an active member of First United Methodist Church and the Methodist Men in Brookings.  He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge, the Shriners, a lifetime member of the American Legion and the VFW.  Clayton served as the past president of the Shrine Club, Commander of the American Legion, Master of the Masonic Lodge, and acted as a Sunday school teacher for several years.

Clayton is survived by his children: Gerald (Bobbie) Sloat, of Philip, SD, Anita (Ralph) Parkin, of Superior, MT, Donna (Robert) Randall, of Roseburg, OR, Stanley Sloat, of Devils Lake, ND, Nancy (Benjimin) Schooley IV, of Coeur d'Alene, ID, Paula (Richard) Gordon, of Sioux Falls, SD, Mark (Tama) Sloat, of Leander, TX, and Sharon (James) Petrik, of Gayville, SD;  32 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

Clayton is preceded in death by his wife, Marlys Sloat; grandson, Bill; granddaughter, Cherrie; great-granddaughter, Janine; and his brother, Dwight; and a dear companion, Edna Riley.
