Clarence R. Coxie Hammer, age 90, of Elkton, died Monday, September 8, 2003, in Brookings, South Dakota. Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Thursday, September 11, 2003, at the United Parish in Elkton, South Dakota, with interment and military rites at the Elkton City Cemetery. Visitations will be from 5-8 P.M. Wednesday at Eidsness-Zink Funeral Chapel in Elkton and preceding services at the church on Thursday. Clarence Raymond Hammer was born May 14, 1913, at Elkton, South Dakota, to L.F. Fred and Emma (Brommerich) Hammer. He attended country school and then helped on the farm. On October 2, 1933, he married Georgia Peck at Elkton. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and received the Purple Heart. Coxie worked for many years as the parts man at Roy Kramer Implement in Elkton. Coxie was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed playing cards and woodworking, and had made many grandfathers clocks for friends and relatives. Survivors include a sister, Elizabeth Monk, of Pipestone; many nieces and nephews; and many special friends, including the W.P. Nelson family of Elkton. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John and Carl, two sisters, Dorothy Hammer and Margaret Bartelt; and his wife, Georgia, on July 17, 2000.
