Obituary

Charles Webbenhurst, age 86, of Brookings died Wednesday, July 9, 2003, at Brookview Manor in Brookings, South Dakota. Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church in Brookings, South Dakota, with interment in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitations will be from 6-8 P.M. Friday at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings and preceding services at the church. Charles Burdette Webbenhurst was born December 11, 1916, at Wessington, South Dakota, to Henry Charles and Cora Christine (Gullickson) Webbenhurst. He grew up in Wentworth and graduated from Wentworth High School. On August 11, 1940, he married Ardys Swenson at Langford, South Dakota. Charles obtained his Bachelors Degree from General Beadle State College in Madison, South Dakota, and later his Masters Degree in Administration from South Dakota State College in Brookings. He taught math in the Vermillion, Erwin, Egan, and Claremont school districts. Charles was also the Business Administrator in the Brookings district for over 25 years. For 15 years, Charles and Ardys spent the summer in Brookings and winter in south Texas after retirement. Ardys died October 29, 1995 Charles was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Brookings, the United Presbyterian Brotherhood, Brookings Lodge No. 24, A.F.&A.M., Brookings Chapter No. 15 of the Order of the Eastern Star, the South Dakota and National Education Association, American School of Business Officers, School Administration of South Dakota, the Beadle Club, was a lifetime member of the Brookings Kiwanis Club, serving over 50 years, and was a counselor at Boys State for many years. Charles enjoyed going to as many sporting events as possible and spending time with his friends and family. Survivors include a son, Robert (Jo) Webbenhurst of Anderson, South Carolina; a daughter, Nancy (Ron) Havens of Plano, Texas; a brother, George (Maureen) Webbenhurst of Brookings; two sisters: Marcene Eggebraaten of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Lorraine Dalton of Copperopolis, California; a son-in-law, John (Jainie) Donaldson of Raleigh, North Carolina; six grandchildren: Tere (John) Bartee of Las Vegas, Nevada, Kyle (Terri) Webbenhurst of Liverpool, California, Tom (Kristin) Donaldson of Edwardsville, Illinois, Carrie (Bart) Tinsley of Wylie, Texas, Ronnie Havens of Plano, Texas and Melanie Havens of Plano, Texas; and one great-granddaughter, Lydia Donaldson. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ardys; a daughter, Joan Donaldson; and two sons: Mark and James.
