Charles H. Ullery, age 62, died Friday, February 13, 2004, at his home in Brookings, South Dakota. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, February 18, 2004, at First Presbyterian Church in Brookings, South Dakota, with interment in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitations will be from 5-8 P.M. Tuesday at Eidsness Funeral Home. Memorials may be directed to the Volunteer Service Bank, 826 32nd Avenue, Brookings, SD, 57006. Charles Howard Ullery was born February 7, 1942, at Trotwood, Ohio, to Russell E. and Dorothy (Fink) Ullery. He grew up in Trotwood, near Dayton, Ohio, and graduated from Madison High School in Trotwood. He received a B.S. degree in 1964 and an M.S. degree in 1967 from Ohio State University. In 1971, he received his Ph.D. in agronomy from Colorado State University. He was an Assistant Professor of Soil Science at Oregon State University from 1971 until 1977. He began employment as an Associate Professor in Agricultural Engineering at South Dakota State University in Brookings in 1977. At the time of his death, he was Professor of Agricultural Engineering and Extension Water and Natural Resources Specialist at SDSU. In 1964 Chuck married Jacqueline Miller. They had three children. On October 27, 1984, he married JoAnn (Grave) Thiesse in Brookings. He was a deacon and elder of First Presbyterian Church and had served as a Sunday School teacher and superintendent and on the Fellowship and Nominating committees. He served as vice chair of the Brookings City Planning Commission. He was a member of the Brookings Rotary Club and was chair of the Governmental Affairs Committee of the Brookings Chamber of Commerce. He enjoyed photography, travel, and riding motorcycles. Survivors include his wife, JoAnn Ullery, of Brookings; a daughter, Andrea (Rob) Graves of Sierra Vista, Arizona; two sons: Craig (Jennifer) Ullery of Anadarko, Oklahoma, and Brent Ullery of Lyman, Colorado; a step-daughter, Deedra Thiesse and her fianc, James Meyer, of Belle Fourche, South Dakota; a step-son, Monte Thiesse, serving in the U.S. Navy at Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma; a granddaughter, Claire Elise Ullery, of Anadarko, Oklahoma; two brothers: James (Pat) Ullery of Lewisburg, Ohio, and Kenneth (Carol) Ullery of Trotwood, Ohio; a sister, Nancy Ullery, of Marion, Ohio; a brother-in-law, Durvard (Carol) Grave of Brazil, Indiana; and many nieces and nephews.
