Charles A. Chester, age 81, of Brookings, died Monday, May 31, 2004, at the Brookings Hospital. Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Thursday, June 3, 2004, at First Lutheran Church, with interment in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitations will be from 5-7 P.M. Wednesday at Eidsness Funeral Home. Charles A. Chester was born September 14, 1922, at Astoria, South Dakota, to Chester and Evangeline (Walburg) Chester. He attended school for three years in Bruce and graduated from Brookings High School. He attended SDSU for one year. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, from October 24, 1942, until February 10, 1946. On November 10, 1949, he married Kathryn Johnston at Brookings. Charlie was the manager of the Brookings-Lake Telephone Company for 32 years. Following the consolidation with Interstate Telephone Company, he was the assistant manager for a year before retiring. Charlie was a member of First Lutheran Church and Brookings Elks Lodge 1490. He enjoyed golf and traveling. Survivors include his wife, Kathryn "Kay" Chester, of Brookings; two sisters: Virginia Taute of San Antonio, Texas, and Myrth Rae Brchan of Minneapolis, Minnesota; and nieces and nephews.
