Obituary

Charles Langum, age 91, and Anne Langum, age 88, of Brookings, formerly of Sinai, died Saturday, March 31, 2007, of injuries received in an automobile accident in Brookings. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Friday, April 6, 2007, at the Sinai Lutheran Church, with interment in the West Sinai Lutheran Cemetery. Visitations will be from 4-8 P.M. Thursday at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings. Charles S. Langum was born December 20, 1915, on the Langum farm near Sinai to Sam and Cornelia (Erickson) Langum. He attended grade school at District No. 45 and Sinai High School. He farmed until 1967 when he worked as the manager of the Sinai Elevator and Oil Company, retiring in 1980. He was active in church, serving as president of the congregation for six years, and also as secretary and trustee; he sang in the Sinai choir for over 30 years. He was a champion horseshoe pitcher, and played in Sinai, Madison, and Sioux Falls. He served on the District 45 school board, Sinai town board, township board, Volga Creamery board, Volunteer Service Bank, and he was chairman of the Sinai 4F Senior Citizens for six years. Charles loved to hunt and fish, and he often caught fish when no one else did. He was known as Sinais handy man, as he was always helping othersgetting their mail, shoveling sidewalks, mowing lawns, babysitting several houses during the winter months, and driving friends to circle, garden club, and senior citizen meetings. Anne (Matson) Langum was born July 3, 1918, at Enchant, Alberta, to Guy and Martha (Gradeland) Matson. She moved with her family to Hills, Minnesota, when she was six years old. She attended grade school and high school at Hills and Augustana College in Sioux Falls. She taught school for several years in the Sinai area. Anne was an avid gardener, and was known as the flower lady of Sinai. She enjoyed helping others plant and weed their gardens, and shared her plants and flowers with others. She made quilts for her children and grandchildren, and did much embroidery and ceramics. She was active in church and circle, taught Sunday school, was a member of the library board, radio committee, church harmony committee, music committee, altar guild, and choir for over 30 years. She was an officer in the mission club, extension club, and Friendship Garden Club since 1942. She served on the cancer fund committee and was a member of the Volunteer Service Bank and Sinai 4F. Charles and Anne were married June 7, 1942, at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Hills, Minnesota. They looked forward to celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary. Survivors include a son, David (Patty) Langum, of Aledo, Illinois; a daughter, Barbara (Larry) Gunderson, of Mansfield, Texas; grandchildren: Michelle (Mike) Miterko, Paul (Molly) Gunderson, Jennifer (Mike) McNeeley, Jeff (Oana) Langum, and Sarah Langum; step-grandchildren, Jackie and Ted Taylor; great-grandchildren: Christopher and Joshua Langum, Christine and Nikolai Miterko, and Charles and Christopher Gunderson; Charles sister-in-law, Jan Langum; Annes brother, Arnold Matson, of Volga, South Dakota; Annes sisters-in-law, Milly Matson and Bert Madtson. They were preceded in death by their parents; Charles siblings: Victor (Betty), George (Marcie), Loyd (Marion), Palmer (Nell), Huldah (Lawrence) Converse, Lillian (Conrad) Lone, and Ruby (Phil) Thompson; and Glen; Charles sister-in-law, Sylvia Langum; Annes siblings: Olga (Bill) Ehde, Melvin (Mary) Matson, Cora (Floyd) Doerr, Garman (Angela) Madtson, Trygve (Stella) Madtson, Clarence (Julia) Madtson, Otto (Janet) Madtson, Gunval Matson, Martha (Vernon) Haraldson, and Donald Madtson; and Annes sister-in-law, Lorraine Matson.
