Obituary

Cedric Clarence Raine was born to Clarence and Lena Gurthrud (Koopman) Raine in Shaokatan Township in Lincoln County Minnesota on January 27, 1930. He died at the Neighborhoods at Brookview in Brookings, South Dakota on December 13, 2020. Private family graveside services will be held in Fairview Cemetery at White.  Eidsness Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.

Cedric attended Country School grades 1 thru 8, Freshman, Sophomore years at Hendricks High School, Junior and Senior years graduating from White High School in 1947.

Cedric farmed east of White with his Dad until enlisting in the Marine Corps in 1950.

Cedric married Gladys Viola Morris in Lake Benton, Minnesota, while home on leave from the Marines, on January 3, 1951.  Upon returning to the Marines, Cedric was stationed in Korea for 53 weeks.  After Korea, he was stationed at Camp Pendleton in California.

After serving his country, Cedric and Gladys returned to the farm east of White, SD and began a lifetime of farming, raising Gelbvieh cattle, and their family.  The day they arrived at the farm was also the day the electricity was turned on at the farm!  They arrived with a new baby, so this was a blessing to start their life on the farm. Cedric milked cows till 1968.  Then concentrated on raising beef cattle.

At early age, through the guidance of a County School teacher, Miss Johnson, Cedric asked Jesus Christ to be his personal Savior.  He was baptized in 1971 at the First Baptist Church in White, South Dakota and was a life-long member at First Baptist.  He served as a deacon and other offices at the Church during his life.  Cedric loved GOD, reading his Bible, and going to Church. He especially loved Gospel music. He enjoyed going to area Churches for sings-perations and Gospel groups like the Ambassador Quartet from George, Iowa.

Cedric was also a faithful steward to the land God gave him to farm.  He was recognized as the Brookings County Soil Conservationist of the year in 1962.  He served on the Brookings County Committee.  He also worked for the FSA for 43 years while farming.

Cedric was also a servant of his neighbors.  He served on the Sherman Township board for many years.  He was an original founding member of Brookings-Deuel Rural Water.  Cedric was a life-time member of Legion Post 88 of White, South Dakota and served as Legion Commander several terms. For many years and many veterans, Cedric led the firing squad for the Legion to honor his fellow veterans.  He was one of the original members of the American Gelbvieh Association.

Cedric enjoyed visiting with anyone.  If you knew him, you have heard a story or two about Korea.  He also enjoyed hunting.   Pheasants with his brother-in-law, Carl DeBeer, as a young man.  Hunting deer with all his kids.  And teaching each kid to shoot gophers in the pastures.  Accuracy was expected, no wasting ammo!

Cedric enjoyed hard work and teaching his kids how to work hard! He also loved to plant trees and watch them grow. There is a "Raine Forest" in Brookings County that once was a cattle pasture.

One of his favorite sayings, "You need to eat six meals a day and three of those should be cookies!" He was known for his sweet tooth and his "pink pennies" candy.

Cedric is survived by daughters:  Cindee (Ricky) Pietz, Lisa Raine, Mary Raine, Sue (Lowell) Crooks; daughter-in-law Peggy Raine; sister-in-law Carol Morris; grandchildren Robbi (Katrina) King, Chad Raine, Aimee Tow, Jon Raine, Eric (Jessi) Raine, Cedric (Candace) Raine; step-grandchildren:  Paul Pietz, Karin Preheim; great-grandchildren, Robbi King II, Heather Keith, Rachel McBride, Brandon McBride, Logan Tow, Slade (Courtney), Cyrus, Isaac, and Jocey Raine and Cybill Raine; step-great-grandchild, Amiah Preheim and many dear nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys, his parents, Clarence and Lena Raine; his son, Joseph Cedric; sisters Virgil Maxine (died in infancy), Verle Johnson and Vanda (Carl) DeBeer.  In-laws Bud C and Mary Morris.
