Obituary

Cecil E. Lane, age 101, died Tuesday, February 24, 2009, at the White Healthcare Center in White, South Dakota. Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Saturday, February 28, 2009, at First Lutheran Church in Brookings, with interment in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitations will precede services at the church on Saturday, beginning at 1:00 P.M.

Cecil Esther (Mennis) Lane was born May 5, 1907, near Toronto, South Dakota, to Ole and Irene (Rolfson) Mennis. She grew up on the family farm southeast of Toronto. She graduated from Toronto High School then attended college for two years at Madison, South Dakota. On July 2, 1931, she married Rolland Lane at Toronto. They farmed north of Brookings and southeast of Toronto before moving to Brookings in 1949. After her husband's retirement, they lived at Lake Poinsett, then Arlington, before returning to Brookings in 1990. In 2001 they moved to the White Healthcare Center. Rolland died February 8, 2003. As a loving wife and mother, Cecil was an active member of First Lutheran Church in Brookings.

Survivors include a daughter-in-law, LaVon Lane of Brookings; a son-in-law, Verne Carlson, of Willmar, Minnesota; a sister, Delores Hoseck, of Winona, Minnesota; a sister-in-law, Evelyn Lane Morris, of Oklahoma; eight grandchildren: James Lane, Julie (Scott) Henry, Jean (Lonny) Beynon, Lori (Harold) Ketola, Dave Carlson, Judy (Lane) Smith, Kathy Lane, and Rolland Lane; 14 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Brian Lane; daughter, Barbara Carlson; a great-grandson, Adam Smith; brothers, Irvie and Raymond; and sisters, Avis (Owen) Hicks and Erma (Roosevelt) Distad.
