Obituary

Carol Faye (Page) Monteith, 90, passed away on December 3, 2016, at the Golden Living Center in Arlington, SD. Funeral services are 1:30 p.m. Saturday, December 10, 2016, at First United Methodist Church in Brookings with burial to follow in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitations will be 4-6 p.m. Friday, December 9, 2016, at Eidsness Funeral Home.

Carol was born on December 14, 1925, to Leo and Miriam (Carr) Page on a farm near Chester SD. She was one of nine children, growing up on a farm near Henry, graduating from Henry High School in 1944. Carol often reminisced about traveling with her siblings to school by horse and buggy.

Carol and Duane I. Monteith were married on November 19, 1944, in Watertown, SD while Carol was in the Barton Hospital, due to appendicitis surgery. During World War II she worked in a bomb factory.

In the spring of 1945, they began farming near Henry, SD.  They then moved to a farm near Summit, SD in 1950.   In 1956, they moved to Brookings along with their four children.   They owned and operated their own restaurant, The Tasty Shoppe for several years. The restaurant was known for its fried chicken and cinnamon rolls. For the next 24 years, Carol worked in the Coast to Coast Store, buying and marketing for the Gift Gallery until she retired. Working in retail was one of the great joys in her life, as she enjoyed meeting new people and being a friend to everyone. Her home in Brookings was always open to all of her children's friends; many called her "Mom" with warm affection. She will be missed by her extended "Mom" family.

Carol was very active in her Church and her "chosen" organizations, Royal Neighbors, VFW, and the Church committees.

During retirement, Duane and Carol enjoyed gardening and traveling.   Many winters were spent in Arizona, with their daughter, Rita and her family.  They loved traveling by motor home visiting family and friends across the US, as family was very important to Carol.

Duane passed away in 2002.  Carol later moved to the Hi-Rise apartments in Watertown, SD, where she enjoyed being close to her siblings.  As health would allow, Carol continued to travel, to visit her daughter in California and son, Dean in Vermont.  Even though Carol suffered from Macular Degeneration, she continued to read and sew as often as she could.  Carol was proud of her family, taking an active interest in their lives.

The last two years she lived with her sons, Steven in Arlington and Alan in Nunda.  She enjoyed the warmth of California last winter with her daughter and family.

Survivors include:  children, Alan (Cheri), Nunda, SD; Steven (Gail), Arlington, SD; Rita (Richard) Trejo, Ventura, CA;  Dean of St Johnsbury, VT;  sisters, Donna Arbogast, Leone Olson, both of Watertown;  brother, Gene Page, Watertown, SD;  9 grandchildren; and 19 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; brothers, Glen, Virgil, Vern, and Bill; and sister, Joyce Pearson.
