Carl A. Westby, beloved husband and father, died February 16, 2005, at the age of 69. Funeral Mass will be 10:00 A.M. Monday, February 21, 2005, at the Catholic Campus Parish in Brookings, with interment in St. Thomas More Catholic Cemetery. A wake service will be held at 5:00 P.M. Sunday at Eidsness Funeral Home, followed by visitations until 8:00 P.M. Carl was born February 8, 1936, at Los Angeles, California. He graduated from Newman High School in Fontana, California, in 1954. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California at Riverside in 1958, and went on to achieve his Doctor of Philosophy from the University of California at Davis in 1965. After undergoing post-doctoral training at the University of Pennsylvania, he taught as an assistant professor at Utah State from 1967 until 1973. He then served as a Professor of Microbiology and Genetics at South Dakota State University from 1973 until his retirement in February of 2003. He was recognized on numerous occasions for his skill as a teacher and researcher. Carl married Merilyn (Pirtle) Westby on August 16, 1958. They had six children together: John (Mina) Westby of Nagoya, Japan, Carolyn Westby of Watertown, South Dakota, Steven (Margaret) Westby of Norfolk, Nebraska, Ann (Chad) Lamer of Park View, Iowa, Theresa (Dan) Steffes of Shoreview, Minnesota, and Carl R. Westby of Brookings. He lived to see nine grandchildren. Carl is also survived by his siblings: Brede (Shelley) Westby of California, Yvonne Hill of Kansas, and Judy (Bob) Groves of California. He was preceded in death by his parents, Irving and Genevieve Westby. Carl was actively involved as a member of Catholic Campus Parish, Knights of Columbus, Boy Scouts, American Society for Microbiology, and Habitat for Humanity. He greatly enjoyed running, camping, hiking, and playing with his grandchildren. He was known for his warm sense of humor, gentle nature, kindness, and generosity.
