Calvin Smith, age 63, of White, passed away on Thursday, October 19, 2017, at the Brookings Hospital. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 24, 2017, at 11 A.M., at the United Methodist Church in White, with burial to follow at Fairview Cemetery in White. Visitations will be held on Monday, October 23, 2017, from 5 P.M. until 7 P.M., at the United Methodist Church in White, as well as one hour prior to services on Tuesday.
Calvin Smith was born on August 22, 1954, to Norman and Katie (Bruns) Smith at Hendricks Minnesota. Much of Calvin's youth was spent growing up on the farm near White. Calvin graduated from Deubrook Schools in May of 1972. Other than a few years spent in Omaha, Nebraska, Calvin called Brookings County home for a majority of his life. Throughout Calvin's marriages he gained 5 children-Nadine, Christina, Cory, Heather, and Randy.
Calvin greatly enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, hunting, and holding turtle feeds. He treasured time spent with his family and grandchildren. During his lifetime, Calvin was able to see both coasts of the United States. He once dreamed of putting his hands in the Pacific Ocean-a dream that he realized only a few years ago.
Throughout his life, Calvin held many jobs, most recently including several years spent at 3M and Falcon Plastics, until career forced retirement.
Calvin is survived by his children: Nadine (Joe) Campbell, of Volga, SD, Christina (Justin) Thomas, of OK, Cory Smith, of Arlington, SD, Heather (Bill) Landmark, of Toronto, SD, and Randy (Christine) Weischedal of Lennox, SD.; grandchildren: Levi (Andrea) Weischedel, Austin Weischedel, Wesley Weischedel, Whitney Weischedel, Heaven Thomas, Katelyn Thomas, Addison Thomas, Bridget Landmark, Christopher Landmark, Devon Landmark, Hayden Landmark, Kylie Campbell, Kody Campbell, and Maddilyn Campbell; great-grandchildren: Kennedy Landmark, and Otto Weischedel; brothers: Virgil Smith, of Howey Hill, FLA, Steven (Judy) Smith, of White, SD, Arven (Carol) Smith, of Elkton, SD, And Vernon (Nancy) Smith, of Gettysburg, SD; sisters: Norma Krogman, of Elkton, SD, Shirley Leisinger, of Lebanon, OR, Arlene (Richard) Robbins, of Wheatland, WY, and Nancy Johnson, of Hawley, TX.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Norman and Katie Smith; brothers-in-law: Don Krogman, Alvin Leisinger, and Kermith Johnson; sister-in-law Betty Maynard Smith; and a nephew, Brad Smith.
