Calvin C. Simmons, age 76, of Brookings, died Tuesday, September 21, 2004, at the Brookings Hospital in Brookings, South Dakota. Funeral services will be 1:30 P.M. Friday, September 24, 2004, at the First United Methodist Church in Brookings, with interment and military rites in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitations will be from 4-7 P.M. Thursday at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings. Memorials may be directed to MINCEP Epilepsy Care in Minneapolis, Angel Flight, ADVANCE, or First United Methodist Church. Calvin Charles Simmons was born September 11, 1928, in Boone Lake Township, Minnesota, to Charles Henry and Blanche Ethel (Hodgdon) Simmons. He attended country school near Churchill, Minnesota, and graduated from high school in Hector, Minnesota. He began working for 3M in 1947. On August 11, 1950, he married Dorothy B. Sheridan at Hutchinson, Minnesota. Calvin served in the U.S. Army from May 10, 1951, until May 10, 1953. Following his discharge from the Army, he was employed at the 3M plant in Hutchinson until December 1970, and the 3M plant in Brookings from December 1970 until February 1988. Calvin was a member of the American Legion and First United Methodist Church, where he served on the Parish-Pastor Committee. He served on the Brookings Mental Health Board and the ADVANCE board for six years. He enjoyed gardening, camping, woodworking, and going for coffee. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy, of Brookings; four children: Thomas (Marvel) Simmons of Albert Lea, Minnesota, Kurt (Carol) Simmons of Columbia, Missouri, Barbara (Tom) Lanning of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and James Simmons of Brookings; five grandchildren; and a sister, Florence Fuglem, of Hector, Minnesota.
