Calvin D. Christie, age 88, of Brookings, died Tuesday, March 31, 2009, at the White Healthcare Center, White, South Dakota. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Saturday, April 4, 2009, at the First United Methodist Church in Brookings, with interment and military rites at Greenwood Cemetery. Visitations will be from 5-7 P.M. Friday at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings.

Calvin David Christie was born September 27, 1920, at Brookings, South Dakota, to Allen Jay and Elizabeth Adeline (Carter) Christie. He attended country school in Brookings County and graduated from Volga High School in 1940. He worked for area farms and for a moving company before entering the U.S. Army. He served in the Army for three and a half years during World War II. On April 4, 1943, Cal married Dorothy Leona Nichols at Freeport, Illinois. Following the war, Cal and Dorothy lived in Brookings where Cal operated a garage and auto salvage yard. He also worked part-time for the City of Brookings. Dorothy died February 10, 2005.

Cal was a member of First United Methodist Church, the Antique Car Club, and a life member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed working on and restoring antique autos, as well as fishing, hunting, camping, and traveling.

Survivors include three sons: Ronald D. (Susan) Christie of Lake Preston, South Dakota, Dannie J. (Nancy) Christie of Brookings, and Reggie L. (Lena Fe) Christie of Brookings; two daughters: Vickie G. (Cliff) Jackson of Watertown, Minnesota, and Trudie L. (Rod) Hersrud of Brookings; twelve grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a brother: Phil E. (Gene) Christie of Brookings; and a sister: Betty J. Wilson of White. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Calvin Lee Christie; his wife, Dorothy; and a brother, Allen B. Christie.
