Cal Steen, age 84, of Elkton, died Monday, March 5, 2007, at the Flandreau Medical Center. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. Thursday, March 8, 2007, at the United Parish of Elkton, with interment in the Elkton City Cemetery. Visitations will be from 4 to 7 P.M. Wednesday at the Eidsness-Zink Funeral Chapel in Elkton. Calvin Burdette Steen was born June 8, 1922, to Emil Carl and Lillian Caroline (Olson) Steen. He grew up on the farm three miles northwest of Brookings. He attended District No. 68 country school for the first eight grades, and he graduated from Brookings High School in 1940. On January 27, 1946, he married Fern O. Johnson at First Lutheran Church in Brookings. She died January 18, 2001. Cal was employed for 34 years by Swift and Company, retiring in 1984 as processing plant superintendent. He was a member of the Lions, Chamber of Commerce, and Jaycees. He served on the church board of the United Methodist Church, on the Elkton City Council for eight years, and as mayor of Elkton for eight years. He enjoyed woodworking and yard and garden work, and he established the tree bank for the City of Elkton. Survivors include his daughter, Deanna (Dennis) Lundgren, of Elkton, and six grandchildren: Jeremy (Becky) Lundgren, Georgianna (Steve) Jensen, Scott Lundgren, Amanda (Chris) Duncan, Joshua Drury, and Dustin Drury; and two great-granddaughters, Chloe Lundgren and Maya Jensen. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; a daughter, Donna Drury; a sister, Kathryn Pedersen; and a brother, Ernest Steen.
